Typical itinerary
Meet in front of the esf office in Chantemerle at 08:30, then drive to La Grave. We take the iconic cable car up to an altitude of 3,200 m, where two outstanding routes await: the Vallons de la Meije and the Vallons de Chancel.
Depending on your ability, pace and the conditions on the day, we can fit in several runs, with up to 2,100 m of vertical descent on each one.
Weather and snow conditions may affect the outing. If conditions are unsuitable, the itinerary will be adapted accordingly.

Detailed itinerary
- Your instructor will contact you no later than the day before the outing to discuss your equipment, skiing ability, meeting point and arrangements for the day.
- If you are interested in more challenging glacier routes or would like to ski couloirs, please let us know when booking so your instructor can plan an outing suited to your goals and ability.
- 08:30 – Meet at the esf office in Chantemerle.
- Safety is our top priority, so before setting off we have a short briefing to go over the planned route and equipment. Avalanche safety equipment is provided (shovel, probe and transceiver), and the day before the outing we will advise you on where to hire any equipment you may need.
- If you do not have your own transport, we may be able to give you a lift.
- A Vallons de la Meije lift pass is required for this outing (indicative 2026 price: €66).
- Throughout the day, your instructor will choose and adapt the route according to the mountain conditions, your ability and what you want to get out of the day, so you can make the most of La Grave’s legendary off-piste terrain.
- We can stop for lunch at the Chancel refuge, or simply take a break there before heading back out for more skiing in the afternoon.
