Little ones

What is the best age to start learning to ski?
Ideally, children can start learning to ski between the ages of 3 and 5, when they are beginning to develop enough independence and coordination on skis.At this age, they can start skiing on their own rather than between an adult’s legs, and their developing balance allows them to anticipate movements and adjust their position forwards or backwards as needed.
What are the first skills children learn?
We start with just one ski on, so children can push themselves along with the other foot, regain their balance and avoid falling.
We then practise moving with both skis, walking with the skis in a V-shape, before learning to bring the knees in.
Next comes the snowplough, which we call the “pointy hat” or “pizza slice”!
Children soon discover that this technique allows them to stop by themselves, helping them feel safe and confident on their skis.
Is learning in a group beneficial?
Yes. Skiing is often more fun with other children, although a private lesson can sometimes help a child overcome a particular challenge or reach the next stage in their progression. At this age, groups usually consist of 7 to 8 children.
To begin with, we spend a lot of time in the children’s ski area, an enclosed and safe environment where children can learn with confidence.
We organise games, set up fun courses and create activities that encourage children to move from one point to another while developing their skiing skills.
Learning through play is the key to making great progress.
Are children aware of the risks?
Not really, but this isn’t a problem as long as they stay on slopes suited to their ability.
However, some parents, keen to enjoy more challenging skiing themselves, may take young children onto slopes that are too difficult for them. Children don’t yet have a clear sense of different ability levels and may feel they can ski anywhere.
It’s often when they find themselves on slopes that are beyond their ability that fear and anxiety can begin to develop.
What equipment does my child need?
Equipment is not included in our lessons.
Children should arrive with skis and ski boots, as well as ski poles if they have already earned their 1ère Étoile. A helmet is strongly recommended for all children’s lessons.
To access the slopes, children will also need a ski pass (free for children under 6).
Don’t forget to put a snack in their pocket and apply sun cream before the lesson.
